What Is Cardiac Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Imaging ?
- Cardiac Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is an advanced imaging test that provides high-definition digital pictures of blood flow to the heart muscle. It allows us to evaluate how well the coronary arteries are supplying oxygen-rich blood to the walls of the heart.
- A small amount of a safe radioactive tracer is administered to highlight blood flow. The PET scanner then captures detailed images that help identify areas of reduced circulation, prior heart damage, or active ischemia (lack of blood flow).
- Cardiac PET imaging is especially useful for patients who are unable to exercise on a treadmill or who have had inconclusive results from a standard stress test. It provides highly accurate information to help diagnose coronary artery disease and guide treatment decisions.
What to expect
The test typically takes about 60 minutes. You will rest comfortably while images are taken. The amount of radiation exposure is low and carefully controlled.
