A Simple, Fast Test to Evaluate Your Heart Rhythm
Electrocardiogram — EKG
Electrocardiogram — EKG
At Caceres Medical Group, we provide in-office electrocardiogram testing,
commonly called an EKG or ECG, to help evaluate the electrical activity of the heart.
An EKG is one of the most common and useful heart tests. It is painless, quick, noninvasive, and can provide important information about your heart rhythm, heart rate, and
possible signs of heart disease.
What Is a EKG?
An EKG is a test that records the electrical signals of the heart. Every heartbeat is
controlled by electrical activity. The EKG machine detects these signals through small
adhesive patches called electrodes placed on the chest, arms, and legs.
The result is a tracing that helps the physician evaluate the heart’s rhythm and electrical
pattern.
An EKG may help identify:
- Irregular heartbeat
- Fast or slow heart rhythm
- Atrial fibrillation
- Premature beats
- Possible prior heart attack
- Possible acute heart problems
- Heart enlargement or strain
- Conduction abnormalities
- Medication-related heart rhythm effects
How Is an EKG Done?
An EKG is performed in our office and usually takes only a few minutes.
During the test:
- You will lie comfortably on an exam table.
- Small adhesive electrodes will be placed on your chest, arms, and legs.
- The electrodes are connected to the EKG machine.
- You will be asked to remain still and breathe normally.
- The machine records your heart’s electrical activity.
- The test is painless and does not send electricity into your body.
After the test is completed, the tracing is reviewed as part of your medical evaluation.
Benefits of In-Office EKG Testing
Having EKG testing available in our office allows for:
- Convenient heart rhythm evaluation
- Rapid information during the medical visit
- Better coordination with your doctor’s examination
- Early detection of possible heart rhythm problems
- Improved care for adults and seniors with cardiac risk factors
