Ultrasonograms & Duplex Studies

At Caceres Medical Group, we provide selected ultrasonogram and duplex ultrasound studies to help evaluate organs, blood vessels, circulation, and certain medical conditions in a convenient office setting.
Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to create pictures inside the body. Duplex ultrasound combines regular ultrasound imaging with Doppler technology to evaluate blood flow in arteries and veins.
These tests can help your physician diagnose, monitor, and manage many adult, senior, cardiovascular, and vascular conditions.

What Is an Ultrasonogram?

An ultrasonogram, commonly called an ultrasound, is an imaging test that uses sound waves to look at internal organs and tissues. It does not use radiation.

Depending on the area being studied, ultrasound may help evaluate the abdomen, kidneys, thyroid, blood vessels, soft tissues, and other structures.

What Is a Duplex Study?

A duplex ultrasound is a special type of ultrasound that evaluates both the structure of a blood vessel and the movement of blood through it.

How Is the Test Done?

During the test, you will lie comfortably on an exam table. A small amount of gel is placed on the skin over the area being examined. A handheld ultrasound probe, called a transducer, is gently moved over the skin.
The ultrasound machine creates images on a monitor. For duplex studies, the machine also measures blood flow and may produce sound or color images showing the direction and speed of circulation.
The test is generally painless and usually takes about 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the type of study.

Why Are Ultrasound and Duplex Studies Done?

Your doctor may recommend an ultrasonogram or duplex study to evaluate symptoms, abnormal physical findings, chronic medical conditions, or cardiovascular risk factors.
These tests may help identify conditions early and guide the next step in treatment.

Some conditions may require referral to an outside imaging center or hospital for advanced imaging such as CT scan, MRI, specialized vascular imaging, or emergency evaluation.
